Grizzly Man – Werner Herzog – (2005)

grizzly_manGrizzly Man is a documentary character study of a guy named Tim Treadwell who decided that he would attempt to feel an affinity with nature and bond with the wild grizzly bears of Alaska.  For over thirteen consecutive summers he spent time as a self-professed protector of nature, fighting against the human world, which he saw as evil, and doing his best to save the precious beasties from human intevention.  This was despite the fact that the bears lived on protected land.

Herzog’s narrative comprises footage filmed by Treadwell himself as well as interviews with those that knew him before his death. Finding Treadwell’s specious ideas of unity and peace in direct contrast to his own views regarding a universe controlled by chaos, Herzog gives interesting insights into the mind of a tragically disturbed man who is making a last desparate attempt at living in the eden of carefree childhood innocence.  Grizzly Man is a film of potent power, poignant themes and intriguing truths.

For any of us who have ever been concerned with the trappings of our own self-made delusions, Treadwell’s story is a message about how we can learn to keep our demons at a safe distance, but if we attempt to live with them forever they will eventually destroy us completely.

An absolute must-see.

The best movie you’ll see in a long time. If you like Wes Anderson movies then I’m pretty sure this was one of his influences…

Bad Boy Bubby – Rolf De Heer -1993

Telling the tale of a singing Australian with incestuous tendencies and a slight Nick Cave look about him, Bad Boy Bubby is certainly not one for the the morally inclined amongst us.

Released in 1993, the movie was labelled as being a particularly controversial one – so much so that it was banned in its uncut form until 2007 in the UK for its scenes of matricide and animal cruelty (cat killing to be precise)…

Perhaps the best things about the movie are the excellent lead performance by Nicholas Hope and the way that it deals with the social issues surrounding people with mental disabilities and their treatment by the rest of the society. As Bubby is found alone and stranded in the world he becomes the victim of just about everybody, from people that want to make money from him or women that want to sleep with him..

If that sounds a bit bleak, be assured that the movie has a happy ending and is definitely one that you won’t forget any time soon..
