Style Wars (1983)

It doesn’t matter if you’re into graffiti or not, Style Wars is one of the most amazing documentaries that you’re ever likely to see.  Racking up an 8.2 score on the IMDB, the movie follows opposing groups of taggers around a 1980s NYC backdrop as they mess up subway cars, wander around and try to find themselves.  Highlights include a one armed graffiti artist who holds godly status within the projects, an angry mayor and a fairly sweet soundtrack.  It’s definitely worth watching, especially to marvel at how fucking cool all the kids in it are – every one of them has a genuine street wise attitude, instead of the watered down Nike/Adidas version that dominates these days.  The thing I like most about it is that end-of-the-70s/start-of-the-80s aesthetic, not exactly dirty but standing at a time before technology gave everything that same, faceless and refined polish that we’ve grown used to. Anyway, I could go on about it for a while but you’re best just watching it.  It’s awesome.
